Crash Lock Boxes – The Complete Guide
Crash Lock Boxes – The Complete Guide
Keeping your products secure on their journey from your warehouse to the recipient is the goal of all types of packaging. Whether you’re protecting a mirror from shattering, a tea cup from cracking, or pipework from being pierced, packaging keeps your products safe in transit.
Both small and large businesses are continuously improving their operational efficiency, and looking to speed up their packaging process. That’s where Crash Lock Boxes can help.
If you’re considering a switch to a Crash Lock Box, or would like to learn more about them, this is the guide for you!
Key Takeaways
- Crash lock boxes offer a quick and efficient assembly process, reducing labour time
- The robust design of these boxes ensures product safety during transit
- They provide an eco-friendly packaging solution, aligning with sustainable practices
What is a Crash Lock Box?
Simply put, a crash lock box is a standard box with a key difference. Instead of having two flaps at the bottom, it has a built-in mechanism that allows for quick assembly.
To assemble, press (or crash) the sides of the box together and the mechanism will lock the base into place.
Crash lock bases are found on both standard FEFCO boxes, and postal boxes.

What are the benefits of a crash lock base?
Crash lock bases have many benefits to using them, from their improved structural rigidity, quick assembly times.
Strength
Robust boxes are important, especially when dispatching heavy goods. Traditional boxes are taped in the middle. This middle seam can become a failure point for boxes that have been not been sealed quite right with tape, or the items inside the box are too heavy.
In contrast, a box with a crash lock base has a board across the bottom of the box, so there is no seam, eliminating the weak point.
Speed
It will come as no surprise that incorporating crash lock boxes into your packing operation will save you time. As no base taping is required, you can save on average 10 seconds per box. Now, 10 seconds may not seem like a long time… but a team of 10 warehouse operatives assembling 100 boxes per hour over an 8-hour day, would save around 2 hours and 20 minutes per day. That will soon add up!
Reduction of material
With the need to tape the base of the box removed, the amount of tape you need to assemble and pack the box is reduced too. In addition to this, if you are using something like a postal box with adhesive strip, you will require no tape at all. This is because a peel and seal strip is a strong glue, that glues the box shut from the inside.
How Crash Lock Boxes Work
Designed to make a hectic packing station a more manageable, crashlock boxes feature an easy assemble mechanism, which locks into place.
The mechanism is comprised of two sides that are glued, and a tab that fits into the other side of the box. Once this mechanism is “Crashed” together, the tab “Locks” the assembled box into place.
To use a crash lock box, simply press two opposite sides together, et voila! Your crash lock box is assembled. Then add your items & protective packaging if needed and seal.
Benefits of Using Crash Lock Boxes
Extending beyond convenience, crash lock boxes have lots of advantages. They can:
Reduce labour costs – due to their quick assembly
Lower the risk of damage in transit – due to the extra structural rigidity of the base, even more so if they contain a concealed crashlock base.
Improve efficiency – your shipments are prepared faster, allowing a quicker turn around time. Imagine how much time you could save by switching.
Increase pallet stability – crash lock boxes always form in the same way. This means that their corners and edges are always uniform. Uniform boxes stack better on a pallet, and therefore have a better load stability than boxes that have not been formed in the same way.
With improved packing efficiency, shipments are prepared faster, enabling businesses to meet tight deadlines and keep up with demand surges. Customers receive their products quickly and in good condition, which enhances their overall shopping experience, and likelihood to shop with you again.
